My interest in the subject dealt with in this study was awakened in Indonesia where I had the opportunity of seeing Bible translators at work and, to some extent, even participating in their discussions. My home leave gave me the chance of gathering some more material in the libraries of Netherlands Bible Society, of the Bible House in London, and of the mission houses in Oegstgeest near Leiden and in Barmen, to the librarians of which I am much indebted. This research work forms the background of this study which, while essentially biblical exegetical, is intended to serve the partical purpose of Bible translating and to promote the unity of the Church in this field. I should also like to express my gratitude to Mrs. L. M. Gibbs, od Basle, for revising this English text.
